For Toddlers

Toddlers learn by playing, so playing doctor with your child can help them feel more comfortable when it’s time for a real checkup. It lets them explore vaccinations in a fun way, which makes them feel safer during the real appointment.  We recommend your child practice giving pretend vaccines to parents and stuffed animals. Caregivers and children should also practice the comfort hold positions they will use during their real vaccination.

Here is an example of how a caring adult, Gisele, helps her puppet friend Zeekoo get ready to visit the doctor.

Social stories use simple language and pictures to show children what to expect and how to behave during new experiences. Here is a video social story about going to the doctor and getting a shot.
